The First Days

This page will describe the basic things you will do in the first days of arrival in Canada.

Step 1: Canada Immigration

Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) is the official branch of the Government of Canada related to immigration issues. When you arrive at the airport or border, you tell the Canadian Border Services officer that you are claiming refugee status. You will then make a declaration to another officer. At the end of the interview, if they decide you can apply for refugee status, and they will give you a PIF kit including:

  • Refugee Claimant Document (The Brown Paper, el papel marron) [Document de demandeur d'asile]
  • The Personal Information Form (PIF) (for more details, see the Hearing document)
  • The Claimant’s Guide
  • List of government resources

The officer will take your passport. Keep the Refugee Claimant Document safe. It is your only legal identification in Canada. You should make a photocopy.
